FAQ

How long can I expect my water heater to last?

Great question! On average, you can count on about 10 to 12 years of good service from your water heater. We've been helping families with their water heaters for years, and that's what we typically see.

How can I figure out how old my water heater is?

That's easy enough! You'll usually find the age in the serial number on your unit. Often, the first four digits will tell you the year it was made, though it can vary a little bit depending on the manufacturer. If you're having trouble finding it or figuring it out, just give us a call! We're always happy to help you find that information.

I don't have any hot water! What should I check first?

Oh no, that's no good! Let's see...
  • Is your water heater leaking? If you see water coming from the tank itself, unfortunately, it often means it might be time for a replacement. But if the leak is coming from a fitting on top, it might be a simpler fix. Remember, about 10-12 years is the average lifespan, and tank leaks can't be repaired.
  • Is the pilot light lit? If the pilot light is on but you still don't have hot water, it could be a thermostat problem. If the pilot light is out, it could be the thermocouple or the thermostat. If your water heater is getting up there in age (around 10-12 years), it might be more cost-effective to replace it since parts for older models can be hard to find and expensive.
  • My pilot light is not lighting, what can I do? It's always best to leave this to the professionals. There are different kinds of pilot light systems, and it can be dangerous for someone who isn't trained to try and tinker with them. We'd be happy to take a look for you!

Do I need to shut down my water heater?

Yes, you should shut it down right away if you see your water heater is leaking or if you smell gas. And, of course, call a professional like us immediately if either of those things happens!

How do I safely shut down my water heater?

Here's what to do:
  • Step 1: Turn off the gas supply to the water heater. Look for the knob on the thermostat at the bottom of your water heater. It will say on/off/pilot. Turn it to the "off" position.
  • Step 2: Turn off the water. Find the cold water line on the top right side of your water heater. There's a shut-off valve on that line. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops.
